Artist Statement – Annelise Kalbak

Back in the 1980s, I built up an “ornament alphabet” which could be plant shapes, flowers and free forms. During this period, Louisiana had an exhibition called Homo Decorans, where art critic Hellen Lassen mentioned me in Lousiana Revy, where an excerpt from one of my paintings was depicted in the catalog at the bottom of the page.

Now I have moved away from the pure ornaments and have worked with the break and larger empty surfaces in my paintings. But flowers do show up – or as floating, feigned leaves.  My inspiration can be Cy Twombly, Helen Frankenthaler, Elsworth Kelly, Roberth Kushner, Preben Hornung, Manet or Matisse.

Eva Pohl from Berlingske Tidende wrote: “A poetic world, as seen in a window pane with reflections” Tom Jørgensen from Kunstavisen wrote: “Clarity alternates with the faintest of sheen, naturalistic precision mixes with expressive bursts of color as in Chinese and Japanese art” Ole Lindboe: “Her art whispers, it is secretive and overtly poetic, subtle, like images of transformation”.
