Artist Statement – Hanne Nielsen Kjærsgaard
I’m a figurative painter who works in thematic series with nature as a focal point. My subject is often about human’s desire to control and glorify nature. How human puts itself over nature and at the same time create symbiotic stories about human and nature e.g. in myths and fables. The scene is mostly set in some kind of nature where the human not necessarily is present but has left some kind of traces on the interpretation.
In my paintings I try to create an atmospheric feeling of something both sinister and lighthearted by emphasizing light versus dark, contorted or flat perspectives and symbolic interpretations of certain parts of the picture, so that the reality and fiction are intertwined.
Light is an important element in my motives and can be included as a concrete light source, like the sun, the moon, electric light or indirectly by painting the colour on in many thin layers to achieve optimal luminance. It generally makes my color attitude intense and saturated; I hereby try to achieve a condensed atmosphere of intimacy and/or drama.
