Artist Statement – Anna Lindgren

Anna Lindgren uses nature, particularly inspired by the magnificent scenery of her native country Sweden, as a metaphor in the human search for answers in life. Depictions of places in nature are presented as a physical response to the search for meaning that arises from human actions that are sometimes difficult to understand. Anna Lindgren places her subjects in strange situations whose ambiguity is confirmed by both the perspective and the way nature is included, posing questions to the viewer. Dream and fantasy combine to create exactly the right atmosphere, which in itself is the best suggestion as to where we can find the explanation to the mysteries of mankind; namely in ourselves as natural objects.

Anna Lindgren’s people are always on their way somewhere in life, with experiences in their luggage, symbolized by the red string and the plants that grow around it. She works with painting, graphics and artist book. In painting, she works with acrylic and oil, which she layers on the canvas with thin glazes, allowing the image to quietly emerge. In her graphic works, she works partly with monotypes, where she inversely washes/dries out the figuration of the image, in artist book it is a mixture of material and method.
