Xenia Dalgaard, parish priest in Søllerød Church
The talk is on the 9th of April at 17:00
‘Not just a saga’
A lecture in words and pictures about Iceland’s magnificent, rugged nature and the literature that, from the saga era to the present day, preserves our memories and reminds us of the meaning of life, shaped around hope, courage and love.
I show photos from a study trip to Iceland and give insight into the unique storytelling tradition that exists in Iceland. The examples range from the great sagas Njals-saga and Eigils-saga to the contemporary authors I met on the study trip, including Jon Kalman Stefansson, Audur Ava Ólafsdóttir, and Einar Mar Gudmundsson.
The Icelandic authors write stories about the fragility of life, ranging from grief and loss as conditions of life to renewed hope, love and courage, and they all stand on the shoulders of saga and Eddic poetry.
If it was just a saga, it would be over… I believe that we can be reminded of the essentials of life by reading both sagas and modern Icelandic literature.
