Artist Statement – Dan Frøjlund
Born 1954 – Realeksamen – Honorable mention in the school garden – Trained Illustrator. Member of the Society of Illustrators in New York. (As far as I know, the only Dane ever.)
I have been painting since December 1988, when I turned my back on everything and started doing what I should have done from the beginning.
I work in the classical tradition, with no real role models, but with the old Dutch looking over my shoulder. Still life/portrait.
My attitude is that paintings are like children, at some point they have to be able to take care of themselves, and this point is when I choose to sign. For this reason, I don’t mind talking about what I do, the painting should, not me.
My paintings have been exhibited in galleries in Denmark, Paris, South of France, Aspen Colorado (never got the money) Las Vegas, London, and probably other places…
At some point I drifted more and more into Portraiture, and I have a feeling I have a certain flair for it, I have certainly painted some of the world’s really rich, semi-rich, nouveau riche, and some in between. At one point I was in the running to paint a portrait of Prince Henrik, but after some meetings, the sad thing happened, for both of us, that he died.
There’s probably a lot more I’ve forgotten, I’ve never really seen the point of CVs, we might as well discuss who got up first this morning and it’s a pain in the ass to keep track of. I’ll end with Stephen Fry’s brilliant words: (At the premiere of his first play)
“I’ve suffered for art, now it’s your turn…”
