Ornaments & Abstraction is Malte Fisker’s second solo exhibition at Davis Gallery. Whereas his earlier works were primarily concept-driven and focused on the visible world, for this exhibition he has chosen to look inward. The result is a purer and more spiritually abstract style of painting, in which every gesture is both concentrated and intuitive.
During his many travels around the world, Fisker has studied geometric ornaments and now weaves ornamentation from ancient cultures into his works, so that line, light, and color come together in a harmonious and spiritual whole. His Catholic background is also clearly reflected, particularly through the inspiration drawn from the stained-glass windows and the decoration of Chartres Cathedral.
The works become an intellectual and spiritual reflection through geometric forms, mathematical rigor, meditative repetitions, color theories, and cultural-historical references. Fisker’s palette of light-sensitive and carefully calibrated colors draws on Josef Albers’ experiments with the interrelationship and perception of color.
In this way, Fisker combines Western abstraction with Eastern philosophy and universal ornamental patterns—a synthesis of various currents in contemporary art.
